People sometimes say the silliest of things, making you quite sure that they have issues with not just their grammar but like – real mental issues.

One such annoying phrase is “Believe you me”. Now I am not sure about the origins of this brilliant contortion of a statement, but this grammatically messed up phase manages to be abrasive to the ear while making no sense - there is always a mental retranslation from “believe you me” to “believe me” when you say or hear this phrase.

Then there is the classic situation where the waiter brings in a horrid looking dish and the diner thrusts a fork full of some dead plant/meat and says “OMG!! This tastes horrible. You have to try this to know, believe you me.”

Sigh!!
