The air smells of burning wood and dry pollen. Smells like wood cooked rice and drying cow dung from the streets.

Smells like my village, but in the middle of the high rise. Smells of my childhood, smells I like, smells of my country !!

Slumdog

February 24, 2009 · Filed Under Opinion · Comment

The news has been all about the sweeping victory of ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ at the Oscars.

My first impressions about the movie: overhyped and stereotyped.

India continues to live the white mans description. Its images still full of slums and the filth. More often than not, the world applauds the perception of India that it is comfortable relating to. Recognition and fame is given to the slums highlighted in Slumdog and Shantaram. Russell Peters joke on the ‘jet of shit air’ that hits your face as soon as you land in Mumbai is probably what most identify with this country.

That said, I am happy for the film and the talented people involved who got their share of glory and recognition.
